Before you send it

If the letter doesn't work, you can claim online through Money Claim Online on GOV.UK. Read how to chase an unpaid invoice for the full process.

This template is general information for England and Wales, not legal advice. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different procedures.

Most invoices never get this far

PaySorted sends polite reminders automatically from before the due date, by email and text — and on the Pro plan it creates this letter for you from the invoice, if it's ever needed.

Questions

What is a letter before action?

A formal letter telling someone who owes you money that you'll start court proceedings if they don't pay by a set date. Courts expect you to send one before you make a claim.

How long do I have to give them to pay?

For individuals and sole traders, at least 30 days under the Pre-Action Protocol for Debt Claims. For companies, 14 days is usual.

Do I need a solicitor to send one?

No. You can send a letter before action yourself. For large or disputed debts, legal advice is worth getting.
